What “parfum” means
Fragrance compositions can contain many materials and are generally represented in a cosmetic ingredient list by “parfum” or “aroma”. This protects formula detail while still allowing the finished product to be assessed and labelled under the cosmetic framework.
The word does not mean the fragrance is natural, synthetic, safe for every person or free from substances that require separate disclosure.
Why some names also appear separately
EU cosmetic rules require specified fragrance allergens to be listed individually above relevant thresholds. Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 expanded the substances covered and provides transition periods for industry.
The ingredient list therefore may change as formulas, supplier compositions or regulatory transition dates change. Use the current package rather than an old online image.
Compliance does not remove individual sensitivity
A product can meet legal requirements and still be unsuitable for a person with a specific allergy or sensitivity. People with known reactions should check the complete current ingredient list and seek qualified advice when appropriate.
“Dermatologically tested” is not the same as allergen-free, and a low fragrance concentration does not guarantee no reaction.
Be careful with fragrance claims
- Natural fragrance: needs a clear, applicable definition and does not prove a lower allergy or environmental risk.
- Hypoallergenic: needs substantiation and should not imply zero risk.
- Long-lasting: depends on method, dose, substrate, environment and individual perception.
- Free from: should be meaningful, truthful and not denigrate safe, lawful ingredients.
Product category and use matter
A fine fragrance, shower gel, cream and household product expose users differently and may fall under different regulatory frameworks. Do not transfer a cosmetic fragrance rule directly to a detergent or vice versa.
