What the term can mean

In household cleaning, “probiotic” is commonly used for products containing selected microorganisms intended to contribute to cleaning activity under use conditions. The exact strains, viability, formulation, dose and intended surfaces are product-specific.

The term should not imply that the product is edible, harmless in every exposure or appropriate for uncontrolled release.

Cleaning is not automatically disinfection

A product can help remove soil without being an authorised disinfectant or biocidal product. Claims such as “kills 99.9% of bacteria”, sanitises or disinfects require the correct legal category, active substance context, test method and authorisation conditions.

Do not infer a disinfection claim from general microbiome or biological language.

Storage and formulation viability

Microorganisms and biological systems can be affected by temperature, moisture, incompatible chemicals and storage time. Follow the current label. Mixing a microbial product with strong disinfectants or reactive cleaners may change its function and can create separate safety issues.

• Use only on listed surfaces and applications.
• Respect food-contact rinsing instructions where relevant.
• Keep out of reach of children and avoid unintended inhalation or ingestion.
• Follow allergy or sensitivity guidance on the label.
• Do not use a household cleaner on skin, animals or food unless expressly intended and legally placed for that use.

Why the regulatory context is changing

The EU’s 2026 detergents and surfactants regulation explicitly addresses products containing microorganisms and introduces updated information structures with transition periods. During transition, manufacturers and retailers must consider both the current applicable framework and future requirements.
